Rosana NG

In 1968 at the age of 21, Rosana NG Lee Kam Sim [伍李錦嬋] moved from Hong Kong and married her pen friend, Hong NG [伍揖雄]. Like many others in an overseas marriage, Rosana went through a challenging time to adapt to the cultural differences between Hong Kong and New Zealand, and also the differences between the families. It was long ago. Time flies. Now retired in Christchurch, she enjoys the weekly gathering with her group of enthusiastic amateur Cantonese opera performers, singing karaoke and Cantonese opera.

Cantonese opera is formalised and sophisticated in its narrative skills. It presents reality through abstraction. I transformed Rosana's home to become a backstage. To create a theatrical vibe, I hung her Cantonese opera costumes on the photographic rack and simulated the lighting effect of the stage. The backlights shine through the costumes’ vibrant colours and resonate with the glittering ornaments. The backstage is indeed a dreaming locale for anyone temporarily staying away from his or her real life.

In Rosana’s portrait, her graceful Cantonese opera hand-pose echoes her facial expression and illuminates an imagined moment, performing on the stage.

伍李锦婵来自香港，一九六八年、芳龄二十一岁的她、与笔友伍揖雄结婚而移居纽西兰。像很多异地婚姻般，她经历了挑战、去适应香港和新西兰的文化差异，与及不同的家庭背景。时间飞逝，那已是很多年以前的事，现在她居住在基督城，享受与一羣充满活力的业余广东粤剧表演者每星期的聚会，唱唱卡拉 OK 和粤曲。

广东粤剧每每有复杂的既定叙述形式及技巧、透过抽象去演绎真实。我把她的家改成后台，以营造戏剧气氛；我以摄影支架挂起她的粤剧戏服，模拟舞台灯光效果、以背光透出充满活力的色彩，和谐地使衣服上的装饰闪闪发亮。后台确实使人能短暂地逃离现实生活进入梦境。
